Angel Networks

The Toronto Technology Business Network hasn't verified the organizations in this list, as we all know that financial intermediaries can vary widely in their utility to entrepreneurs.

Research indicates that online entrepreneur-investor matchmaking systems have a historic 0.07% success rate (i.e. 1 in 1428 submissions get funded).

National Organizations

  • Angel Organization Summit
    Maintains the most complete directory of angel groups around. Holds an annual conference (the fourth so far) in North America. Has a collection of research publications.

  • National Angel Organization (NAO)
    A not-for-profit organization that provides angel investors with a secure environment within which to network and learn from their peers as well as providing a platform where they can be collectively heard on national issues.

    Through a secure online directory, angel investor education and networking programs, angel investor resources and studies, the NAO will foster an active angel community in Canada thus leading to a vibrant and healthy economy. Henry Vehovec is President and co-founder. Held a conference in in Montreal, October 29-30, 2003. See Events Calender.

Toronto

  • Toronto Angel Group (TAG)
    Toronto Angel Group has secured 40+ active angel investors as members. Seven Investment Dinners will be held over 2003/2004 season. Founded by Frances Fast (of the TVG) with a small fraction of member angels being interested in pre-revenue companies. Members must be accredited investors.

  • VentureFair
    VentureFair is Canada's premier showcase of venture capital ready and backed, growth companies. The 2004 event is the 9th VentureFair organized by Toronto Venture Group, Canada's pre-eminent venture capital networking group. The not-for-profit organization has been dedicated to bridging the gap between entrepreneurs and capital for more than a decade. VentureFair is Toronto Venture Group's annual funding event. Over 400 attendees are expected in 2004, and since 2000, VentureFair has seen 46 companies receive funding of over $387,000,000.

  • Chin Up
    A charity for nerve injury patients. Hosted the CHIN UP Angel Investor Invitational Golf & Dinner Event, which is a networking opportunity for Angel Investors at the Copper Creek Golf Club, near Toronto.
  • MIT/Schulich Enterprise Forum
    Operated by the MIT Alumni Association and York University's Schulich School of Business, the forum brings together entrepreneurs, investors and other business professionals to exchange ideas and build networks. Its format is based on the MIT Enterprise Forum which was founded in 1978 and operates in over 20 cities in the USA, Europe, Asia and Mexico, as well as Toronto. The Toronto chapter has been active since 1988 and has hosted more than 100 events and 5000 participants.

  • AngelInvestors Canada
    A local chapter of International AngelInvestors. The Toronto organization has not yet held a meeting, and have a web-based matchmaking service which has yet to result in a successful match between an entrepreneur and an investor.

  • Catalyst Partnership
    Venture capital and management consulting company based in Toronto, Ontario. Provides support to venture capital companies, investment groups, and corporate clients for various assignments including strategic business planning and execution, investment due diligence, valuation, acquisition, and financing activities.

  • Cleantech Venture Network
    These guys are just the coolest organization. Focuses on "clean technologies", from solar energy to water purification. We introduce promising young companies to investors and investors to quality deal-flow. We are developing a community of money managers, business executives, professional advisors, and other stakeholders active in the cleantech venture arena. Our services include venture forums, Venture Monitors and online services to investors and companies. Their first venture forum was held in Toronto and went over well.

  • Environmental Capital Network
    The Environmental Capital Network provides individual, professional, corporate, and institutional investors with access to companies that are commercializing "green" technologies, products, and services. The network reviews business plans, offers employee training, hosts Capital Forums, and publishes the "Investor's Bulletin." The ECN Web site links to the Angel Capital Electronic Network and the Environmental Business Capital Access site.

  • New Product Development Consortium
    A serious organization with $100 million available for high-risk invesment among 126 members, 40% of whom have completed transactions through NPDC.

  • National Association of Seed and Venture Funds (NASVF)
    An association of private, public and nonprofit organizations committed to building their local economies by investing and facilitating investment in local entrepreneurs. NASVF began in 1993 as an ad-hoc group of practitioners seeking the best models to encourage capital formation in their states, particularly for new technology ventures.

    A free publication with resources, a free email newsletter, and international events listing.

    Maintains a directory of international chapter organizations.

    At the University of Toronto. Professionally managed and have a record of helping firms to raise money through the city's finance network. They are the hub of a nice community of cool people.

  • Brightspark
    Rumoured to have their hands full with the existing portfolio. In Toronto.

  • General Catalyst Partners
    In Cambridge, Mass.

Venture Capital

  • The Canadian Venture Capital Association (CVCA) has already made a list of venture capital firms, so you can go through their site and pick your five or six best matches to focus on at: http://www.CVCA.ca/

  • Websites with directories of venture capital firms include: VCProfile.com is now out of business, but its service TorontoVC.com remains useful while slowly becomming dated. Others include vFinance.com, and CanadaVC.com.

  • Ideas People Money
    Also known as the the Angel Investors Funding Network (AIFN), is a free bulletin board for early-stage deals for entrepreneurs and investors to browse.

  • Springboard Enterprises
    This resource is cool because it specifically targets women, who are ridiculously underrepresented in this space to nobody's benefit. They have held at least one venture forum event in Toronto.

  • Labour-sponsored Funds
    Their intake in recent tax seasons have been well below expectations. Examples are Covington, VenGrowth, Working Ventures.

  • A list of Venture Capital firms that invest in technology at Strategis

Debt Financing

  • Venture Debt is available for larger deals, and Mezzanine finance is often debt-based, for amounts of $10 million or more and involving profit-producing companies.

  • Small Business Loans Act
    Government guaranteed loan of up to $250,000, for capital assets only.

  • Youth Entrepreneurship Loans
    Small loans. Contact the Royal Bank.

  • BDC Microloan and Innovation Loan
    Can be used for working capital rather than just fixed assets. Microloan is to $50,000 and the Innovation loan is up to $250,000. The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has a reputation for needing to be harangued to get anywhere with. http://www.bdc.ca/
